Typing Over Text in Microsoft Word

One day, all of a sudden, your text isn't inserting anymore, but typing over top of your previous text. There's a few things you can do, but they all accomplish the same task.

  • Hit your Insert key once. My wireless keyboard doesn't have one, so this won't work for me, but you might have one.
  • The OVR may be turned on in Word's status bar at the bottom of your screen, as shown. Just double-click it to turn it off.

  • If you're unable to resolve it with either of the above two methods, go to ToolsOptions, Edit tab, and uncheck Overtype mode. debuted on May 26, 2005. provides examples of Formulas, Functions and Visual Basic procedures for illustration only, without warranty either expressed or implied, including but not limited to the implied warranties of merchantability and/or fitness for a particular purpose.
