The easiest method of creating an automatically generated table of contents (TOC) uses styles in your document.
By default the TOC is based on Heading 1, Heading 2, and Heading 3 styles. If you used other styles in your document, you can Modify the TOC to refer to those instead.

You can delete the 1, 2, 3 out of the TOC level for those Headings, and type them into the TOC level boxes for the styles you are using and want to include.
